Cosmetic procedures have been trending upward over recent decades; however, their statistics among both men and women have reached a new height. In 2018, men and women in the United States chose to undergo over 17.7 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. That is over 250,000 more than in 2017, and that number is not projected to lessen anytime soon.
So, why the not-so-sudden rise in popularity?
Plastic surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic enhancements were once taboo, which meant that, for most individuals, denying they had any cosmetic work had been performed was part of the plastic surgery routine.
This denial is no longer the case; now, women—and increasingly more men—are proud to show off their results to friends, family, co-workers, or their social media feeds.
It finally seems as though both women and men feel comfortable admitting that looking and feeling happy in their own skin is important to them. Plastic surgery is rarely only ever about vanity; it is about allowing the patient to gain confidence and comfort in the physical attributes that have been caused them turmoil.
What Procedures Reach the Top?
Breast Augmentation
As it has been for years, breast augmentation was the most common surgery in 2018 with 313,735 procedures performed. This is a four percent increase from the previous year.
Breast augmentation allows all women over the age of 18 to enhance their confidence by altering the size, shape, and projection of their breasts. Breast augmentation is not only for women who want substantially increase the size of their cleavage but also for every woman that has felt as though the size or shape of her natural breasts did not match the rest of her body. Proportional body balance is essential; without it, clothing will never fit properly without tailoring, and confidence will be hard to maintain.
Breast augmentation is also appropriate for women with naturally small breasts or breasts that never fully developed, noticeable asymmetry, and whose breasts have “deflated” after pregnancy or weight loss.
In some cases, breast augmentation can be performed in combination with a breast lift to restore a youthful and perky breast.
Liposuction
Coming in the second spot is liposuction with 258,558 procedures performed: a five percent increase from 2017. Liposuction’s popularity should not be a surprise. Everyone—man or woman, young or old—wants firm and toned body contours. That is why we spend so much time at the gym and follow the latest, craziest dieting trends.
We want to look slim, youthful, and healthy. Unfortunately, that is far easier said than done. Even with dedication and diligence, genetics can prevent some men and women from achieving their ideal body definition. In these cases, liposuction is ideal for losing the final pockets of fat in the abdomen, hips, thighs, back, buttocks, arms, knees, calves, and ankles.
BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections were administered over 7.44 million times last year; that is over 20,000 injections per day. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular minimally invasive procedure and is the optimal non-surgical way to smooth lines and wrinkles in the upper region of the face.
BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces the appearance of mild to severe crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines and does so without any incisions, sutures, or scars. BOTOX® Cosmetic can be performed in as little as 15 minutes with no downtime besides minor discomfort that dissipates within a few hours. BOTOX® Cosmetic provides smooth, rested, and youthful eyes for months and can be safely repeated as often as necessary.
Soft Tissue Fillers
Soft tissue fillers fall just behind BOTOX® Cosmetic in popularity with over 1.68 million injections performed last year. The JUVÉDERM® family offers relief from the common signs of aging in the middle and lower regions of the face.
JUVÉDERM® is a hyaluronic acid filler, meaning that it restores volume by attracting moisture and hydration. This not only plumps the area where it was injected but stimulates collagen so that your skin naturally smooths.
JUVÉDERM® can be used to lift and fill hollowed cheeks, plump thinning lips, or fill in wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and smoker’s lines.
