Since liposuction removes unwanted fat cells, it can technically be considered “weight loss.”Woman undergoing a liposuction consultation

This technical definition can be misleading. Fat reduction with liposuction is meant to contour the body by removing fat cells from areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise in the past. Unfortunately, even liposuction has its limits, and these limits prevent the surgery from being a solution to obesity.

When Is Liposuction Effective?

Sometimes, even with consistent dieting and exercise, it is difficult to get rid of fat from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, arms, or thighs. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that suctions away unwanted fat cells, creating a more defined athletic contour.

Liposuction is highly effective for men and women who are near to their goal weight but are looking for additional help toning and sculpting their desired curves.

What Does Liposuction Do?

Liposuction combines small incisions with vacuuming technology to physically remove fat cells from the body. This is different from traditional weight loss techniques, as weight loss allows for the shrinkage of cells, not a reduction in the actual number of cells.

Area Treated by Liposuction:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Flanks
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Under the chin

How Much Fat Is Removed With Liposuction?

The limits of liposuction vary from person to person, depending on your overall health, ability to withstand the procedure, and your body mass index (BMI). Because everyone’s BMI is different, there is no “definite” amount of fat that can be safely removed.

In optimal cases, a total of five liters of fat can be removed from a given area at one time. This correlates to roughly 10 to 12 pounds.

What If I Have a Greater Volume of Excess Fat?

Many interested liposuction candidates have a significant amount of excess fat. Unfortunately, if you are significantly overweight or obese, liposuction may not be appropriate to provide you with the results that you want.

Ideal liposuction candidates must be in good overall health with no medical conditions that can impair their ability to heal.

What Are Other Procedures for Weight Loss?

Patients with a more significant amount of excess fat may be asked to lose some weight before their liposuction treatment. This can be done naturally, though a healthy diet and exercise program, or can be accomplished with an actual weight loss surgery, such as gastric bypass or a gastric sleeve.

These procedures alter the size of the stomach, thus restricting the amount of food that you can take in at a time.

Although liposuction may not be appropriate for everyone, it can be very beneficial for the right patient.
